Description:

Approximate Running Time: 2 hours For decades the debate over educational reform has sparked passion, anger and frustration across the continent. Now, as we enter a new millennium, government, teachers, parents and, most of all, students are grappling with a new set of issues such as standardized testing, national benchmarks and the privatization of schools. However, as schools become increasingly violent and the actual academic success of students is brought into doubt, many are questioning whether compulsory schooling is really the best way to educate our children.
Recorded live in front of a capacity crowd at University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall, this special two CD set brings together two of the most dynamic voices, Hamza Yusuf and John Taylor, for educational reform on the continent
Drawing on a deep understanding of American history, John Taylor Gatto takes the listener on a journey through the dark roots of compulsory schooling as told through the words of its primary architects. Based on years of research and experience in New York City’s best and worst schools, Gatto brings humor and acute analysis to his refreshingly honest and powerful presentation.
Beginning with a discussion of the Native American experience, author and teacher Hamza Yusuf explores the spiritual dimensions of education and calls for a return to community based learning. Inspired by the rise of the homeschooling and alternative schools movements, Yusuf argues that concerned families and communities can create genuine and compelling educational experiences for young people.
Calling on people to engage in a struggle for a visionary approach to education, John Taylor Gatto and Hamza Yusuf ask us to join with the millions of courageous people struggling to provide creative learning opportunities that will help our children meet the challenges of today.
Digitally recorded in stereo sound, this special presentation will be an invaluable source of inspiration and common sense for people committed to real educational change.
